Purpose:

The Civil Division of the Douglas County Attorney’s Office has the duty to prosecute or defend, on behalf of the county, all civil suits, applications, or motions, arising under the laws of the state in which the county is a party or interested.

The Civil Division also gives opinions and advice to the board of county commissioners and other civil officers of Douglas County, when requested so to do by the board or officers, upon all matters in which the state or county is interested, or relating to the duty of the board or officers in which the state or county may have an interest.  The Civil Division, upon request, provides counsel to the board or county officers on such civil law matters.

The Civil Division is responsible for representing the State in the final determination of Inheritance Taxes due on estates settled in Douglas County or involving property located within Douglas County. *New Inheritance Tax Review Process*

The Civil Division pursues involuntary commitments of mentally ill and dangerous individuals and dangerous sex offenders before the Douglas County Board of Mental Health.

Tax Foreclosures as a result of non- payment of real estate taxes are also handled by the Civil Division attorneys.
